Watch the sun rise over the smoking crater of Mount Bromo and the sea of sand from the Penanjakan viewpoint, then cross the caldera by jeep and climb to the crater rim.

Pickup from Malang is around midnight. A 4x4 jeep takes you up to the Penanjakan (or King Kong Hill) viewpoint for sunrise over the Tengger caldera, with Mount Bromo steaming in front and Mount Semeru, Java's highest peak, puffing behind.

After sunrise, drive across the Sea of Sand, climb the 250 steps to Bromo's crater rim, and visit the Whispering Sands and Savanna 'Teletubbies Hill' before returning to Malang.

  • It's cold before dawn (often 5-10°C) – bring a jacket, hat and gloves.
  • Bring a scarf or mask for the volcanic dust.
  • The crater may close when volcanic activity is high; the jeep tour then visits other viewpoints.

  1. Prices are per ticket in Indian Rupees (INR) and include taxes. You pay the total shown at checkout – there are no hidden booking fees.
  2. Your booking is confirmed once payment succeeds. Your e-ticket or voucher is emailed to you, usually within 24 hours of booking.
  3. Carry your passport; attractions and tour operators may check the lead traveller's ID against the booking.
  4. Child prices follow the operator's own age rules, checked on the day. If a ticket type doesn't match, the difference may be charged there.
  5. Pickup times are confirmed by the operator the day before. Hotel pickup covers the main tourist areas (for Bali: Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Sanur and Ubud); other areas may have a small surcharge.
  6. Bookings are valid only for the date on your voucher. To change the date, contact Plantenium before the day – changes depend on availability.
  7. Boat trips, treks, dives and water sports can be cancelled for weather, sea conditions or volcanic activity. If the operator cancels, you get a full refund or a new date.
