Pickup from your hotel is around 2:00 AM. At the trailhead, a local guide leads you up Mount Batur (1,717 m) by torchlight – about 2 hours of steady, sometimes steep walking on volcanic gravel.

At the top, watch the sky light up over Lake Batur, with Mount Agung and, on clear days, Lombok's Mount Rinjani on the horizon. Breakfast includes eggs and bananas steamed in volcanic vents. Prefer not to hike? The jeep package drives you to a sunrise viewpoint instead.
