Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali's six key temples, perched on a sheer cliff at the island's southern tip. Walk the clifftop path at sunset – and keep hold of your sunglasses, the temple's monkeys are famous thieves.

As the sun goes down, a circle of about 70 men chant 'cak-cak-cak' in the open-air amphitheatre while dancers act out the story of the Ramayana, ending with Hanuman the monkey god dancing through fire.

      • Arrive by 5:00 PM – the amphitheatre fills up and seats are first come, first served.
      • Monkeys grab glasses, phones and hats; keep them in a closed bag.
      • Cover shoulders and knees; a sarong is provided.
