Water puppetry began in the rice paddies of the Red River Delta, where villagers performed on flooded fields. At the Thang Long theatre, puppeteers stand hidden behind a bamboo screen, waist-deep in water, moving lacquered wooden puppets on long rods.

The 50-minute show is a series of short scenes – rice farming, fishing, dragon dances, legends of Hoan Kiem Lake – accompanied by a live orchestra of traditional instruments and singers. No Vietnamese is needed to enjoy it.
