Ninh Binh, about two hours south of Hanoi, is a landscape of rice paddies and limestone peaks threaded with rivers. Start at Hoa Lu, Vietnam's capital in the 10th century, with temples to the Dinh and Le kings.

After a buffet lunch, glide by rowing boat through the caves and grottoes of Trang An (a UNESCO site), take a short bike ride through the countryside, and finish by climbing the 500 steps to Mua Cave's viewpoint for a sweeping view over the valley.
